An Obsession to Find Her
About 44 years ago, I was a soldier in the army and stationed in an eastern city where I met a young lady. We went out for about 10 months, and she became pregnant. She told me once, "I think I may be pregnant", and that was all I heard about it.
About a month later, I was transferred to another camp 2000 miles away. I found out from my buddies who were also transferring, that "the girl I had been going out with" had a baby girl.
I had told her before I left her that I would write, which I did - six letters and no answer. My immediate thought was that she had thrown in the towel on me.
I had gone to the Battalion commander to see if I could get compassionate leave but was told that since I was not married, I did not qualify. Having very little money, I waited almost six months to get leave and went back to the city where she lived. Unfortunately, she had moved and I couldn't find her.
I went to the hospital, but no answers. The children's and family aid told me my daughter had been placed for adoption, but that was all the information I could get.
I searched for 44 years and finally found her Aug 12/02. I was elated, of course, and still am. We had a reunion that went great. We spent a lot of time together just talking, and I told her my love for her was UNCONDITIONAL. I didn't care if she was fat, thin, short or tall; I loved her all the same.
We took it slow and left out all the "information overload", as I call it. Now, we call each other every week and e-mail a lot. It's turned out wonderful, and I believe I have begun a new life. It all stemmed from a child born in 1958 that I could not forget about, and it became an obsession to find her, which I did. Never quit!
